Course outline
The course starts by introducing you to Silversmithing tools and basic skills; annealing, texturing and stamping, using a piercing saw – Including use of texture hammers, the rolling mill and metal forming tools. Creating a range of samples and building confidence.
You will then go on to learn different soldering techniques. Including layering metals and creating joins which you can use to make rings and bangles and pendants.
With these skills learnt, you can then start to experiment with your own forms and shapes as you learn how to make stacking rings, chains and various findings.
No piece of jewellery is complete without a beautiful finish. Polishing and finishing is a great skill to learn – For this part of the course you will be taught how to sand and refine your work to a high standard using both papers and a polishing machine. You can create satin finishes, use patinas and create amazing mirror shines to create a silver pendant.
The final skill to learn on the course is stone setting. This is beginners stone setting and will introduce you to a rub over setting which is used to set a cabochon stone in a ring or pendant.
The final week is your chance to bring together all of the skills you have learnt and create your own unique piece with guidance. For this piece you will need to supply your own materials based on your design. I will introduce you to the best suppliers and how to order your silver, including how to best plan your pieces. Or you can revisit pieces from the previous weeks.
